SONIC CROSSING ON THE TEES TRANSPORTER BRIDGE
12:30, 13:30 & 14:30 Saturday 6th October 2018
Tees Transporter Bridge, Ferry Road, Middlesbrough, TS2 1PL
www.facebook.com/events/282607572348562/

Visitors are invited to experience the audio vibrations inside the Tees Transporter Bridge on a unique sonic crossing! Meet in the Visitor Centre at the Bridge for 12:30, 13:30 & 14:40 crossings

The beauty of the industrial architectural history and ultra modern contemporary structures of the region are connected through sonic vibrations and stories of the Tees Transporter Bridge and the Infinity Bridge. Amplifying and listening to the voices of the structure and people using these bridges, we bring listeners into a conversation that connects with the deeper poetic, creative and philosophical echoes that resonate through the locations of the bridge.

The Tees Transporter Bridge has been the area's landmark since opening in 1911. It is the longest working transporter bridge in the world and an iconic symbol of Teesside's engineering and industrial heritage. The Transporter Bridge has played an important role in the area's history for over a century and continues to provide a and unique crossing over the River Tees.

In 2011 the Tees Transporter Bridge received a £2.6 million Heritage Lottery Fund award for improvement and renovation work to mark the Bridges centenary. The improvement works include the installation of a glass viewing lift to the landmarks upper walkway and renovation of the gondola. In 1953, the gondola got stuck half-way. While it was stuck, gale force winds lashed water to within inches of it. However, despite this the gondola and The Transporter Bridge are still running in perfect order. Tosh Warwick, (ex) Tees Transporter Bridge education, learning and events officer, said: “The first test run of the newly renovated gondola marks a landmark day for the Tees Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience Project and an important event in the history of the landmark. “The renovation works to the gondola will greatly enhance the experience of those using the crossing, with glass panelled sidings offering unique views up and down the River Tees.”
